Luminus’ PhlatLight LED unit wins display industry accolade

Eight-module unit featuring 24 LEDs 2008 wins Gold Award from the Society of Information Display (SID).

Billerica, Massachusetts — May 12, 2008 — Luminus Devices, Inc., the developer and manufacturer of PhlatLight (Photonic Lattice) LED products for a wide variety of display and illumination applications, today announced its PhlatLight LED back light unit (BLU) has won the 2008 Display Component of the Year Gold Award from the Society of Information Display (SID), the highest industry honor.

Last year Luminus won the 2007 Silver Award from SID for PhlatLight LEDs used in projection applications, making them a rare repeat winner.

The PhlatLight 46-inch BLU is illuminated with eight light modules, each containing a single red, green and blue PhlatLight LED. The LEDs illuminate the BLU from the edges, not the back, enabling thinner designs.

"We are proud to win the 2008 Gold Award, and to have our product honored alongside such prestigious products," said John Langevin, VP sales and marketing, referring to the Apple iPhone and the Sony OLED TV, who are the other two recipients of the SID gold awards this year. "We believe the PhlatLight BLU earned this distinction because it provides a low cost and reliable solution that can finally enable RGB LED backlighting in mainstream, large screen LCD TVs."

The BLU enabled by PhlatLight technology is the result of an intensive collaboration between Luminus Devices and Global Lighting Technology, which specialized in MicroLens (TM) light guides for backlighting and other applications. "We consider GLT a full partner in the product and in the honor of this award," added Langevin. More recently, Luminus and GLT engaged Jabil Corp as a design and manufacturing partner for integrating this technology and taking it to market."

Luminus will receive the 2008 Display Component of the Year Gold Award during a luncheon on Wednesday, May 21, 2008, as part of Display Week 2008: The SID International Symposium, Seminar & Exhibition, which will take place May 18-23, at the Los Angeles Convention Center in Los Angeles, California.

Luminus will be demonstrating the award winning PhlatLight BLU and other PhlatLight LED powered projection products in private demonstrations at the Sheraton Downtown near the LA Convention Center. "We are delighted to award Luminus Devices' PhlatLight technology with the Gold honor for the 2008 Display Component of the Year," said Dick McCartney, SID's DYA Chair. "The Display of the Year Awards is hands down, the most prestigious accolade commending the chief influential technologies across the global display community."

"The high caliber of products and technologies nominated this year has certainly made the decision process tough on our Awards Committee, but among the significant number of nominations received from around the world, Luminus Devices' PhlatLight technology stood out for the second year in a row." McCartney added, "On behalf of SID, we would like to truly commend Luminus Devices' ongoing commitment to innovation and to shaping the future of today's display arena."
