Splitting schematic

Used to harness solar energy, the p-type GaP material acts as a photocathode. The electrical energy converted drives an electrochemical reaction that splits carbon dioxide molecules. The UCSD team uses GaP because of its relatively wide bandgap compared with silicon or other compound materials used in triple-junction solar cells. Credit: UCSD.
