Lumileds opens LED factory in Malaysia

High power LED manufacturer Lumileds has opened a new facility in Malaysia, with three times the capacity of its Penang factory.

Lumileds lighting is opening a new plant in Malaysia to meet increasing demand for its high brightness Luxeon LEDs.

The facility, located in a 200,000 square-foot building, will replace the company’s Penang factory this summer, tripling both floor space and manufacturing capability.

"This move will allow us to stay ahead of the demand curve and enable us to handle our growth projections for the foreseeable future," said Greg Crema, Lumileds’ vice president of worldwide manufacturing.

Lumileds expects its workforce to double once all production lines are fully deployed. It could also expand services such as calibration, reliability testing and failure analysis.

Manufacturing at the new larger plant began in April. To reduce disruption, simultaneous production currently takes place at both sites, with complete transfer to the new site expected this July.

The line also includes the first warm white LEDs available in volume.
