Bandwidth buys multiple tools from Veeco

Bandwidth Semiconductor has purchased several MOCVD reactors from Veeco to fulfill an order for VCSEL epiwafers for TV applications.

US-based compound semiconductor foundry Bandwidth Semiconductor has bought multiple TurboDisc E450 As/P MOCVD reactors from Veeco Instruments.

The additional capacity will be used to manufacture III/V and II/VI epiwafers for a customer that makes electron-beam-pumped VCSELs that are used as a light source for projection display applications, including rear-projection consumer television.

"After reviewing competitive systems, it was clear that the high production throughput of Veeco's MOCVD systems will allow us to meet our customer's production requirements," remarked Bandwidth Semiconductor general manager Edward Gagnon.

The E450 tool is Veeco's largest capacity reactor, and can offer direct wafer temperature control and fast gas switching.

In Veeco's third quarter, which ended on September 30, Bandwidth had placed the fifth largest order overall, and the biggest order from the wireless and high-brightness LED sector.
