PCSELs proven to be faster than other lasers

News

Initial tests show that Vector Photonics' Photonic Crystal Surface Emitting Laser is faster than VCSEL and DFB laser equivalents

A paper presented at the Compound Semiconductor International Virtual Conference on 12th April, 2021, reveals that Vector Photonics' PCSEL technology is capable of significantly faster speeds than equivalent VCSEL or EELs.

The paper by David Childs, director of product development at Vector Photonics, describes the first speed measurement of the company's PCSEL technology. Childs confirms that the speed aligns with the company’s device modelling and he concludes that a PCSEL, with a smaller area and optimised for speed, has the potential to be over two times faster than a VCSEL equivalent and three times faster than a DFB laser equivalent.

The presentation is timetabled for 12.55 to 13.10 at the CS Conference, with registration available on the link: https://onlinesummit.angel-tech.net/

Childs is co-inventor of the Vector Photonic’s PCSEL technology. Prior to becoming director of product development at Vector, he was developing laser research at the University of Glasgow, in the Electronics and Nanoscale Engineering division of the James Watt School of Engineering. His industrial experience also includes commercial laser development at Marconi Optical Components.
