RHK Study Ranks Alcatel Number One Vendor in Global Telecom Transport Market

RHK Report Cites Alcatel s Leadership in Submarine Networks and the global DWDM market

Paris. Fueled by tremendous demand for its optical submarine networks resulting from the explosion of the global Internet and data traffic, Alcatel has been named the number one technology systems vendor in the global telecommunications transport market, according to the new European and Global Transport Market Study from consultancy RHK.

RHK, a leading telecommunication consultancy, found that Alcatel holds a 21 percent share - the number one position - of the world s telecommunications transport market, which comprises submarine networks and other long-haul optical transmission systems. RHK noted that Alcatel s market-leading 37 percent market share in the submarine networks segment helped secure the top position in the global transport market. In addition, RHK found that Alcatel commands a 37 percent share of the digital crossconnect systems (DCS) segment.

"Alcatel has successfully penetrated all global markets," said Stephane Teral, Director, European Transport with RHK. "Considering their strong position in submarine systems, Alcatel is the global leader in terms of DWDM market share when you consider the global market encompassing both terrestrial and sub-sea applications."

According to Christain Reinaudo, President of Alcatel s Optical activities: "As the demand for intercontinental network capacity continues to grow around the globe - fueled largely by the Internet and international data traffic - Alcatel is helping carriers meet the demand by using technology innovations, such as DWDM and integration with IP channels, that allow us to squeeze more capacity out of fiberoptic cabling, as the RHK figures prove. An example of our growth in global transport can be seen in submarine cabling, where we will have installed more than 230,000 kilometers of fiber optic cable - enough to circle the earth nearly six times over - by the end of 1999." Alcatel provides a broad range of transport technologies and product to telecommunications providers carriers worldwide, including DWDM, SDH, DCS and comprehensive "wet and dry" network implementation capabilities. Alcatel is the world s leading integrated submarine networks supplier able to offer turnkey solutions to its customers. Not only does Alcatel lead the world in terms of technology and capacity for its Optinex undersea systems, it has the largest manufacturing capacity at 85,000 km per year and is able to control installation schedules through its long-term leasing of four purpose-designed cable-lay vessels and three further vessels suitable for maintenance or ancillary operations. The company is currently working on a number of contracts around the world valued at some US$4.5 billion, most of which utilize DWDM technology. Current contracts include the most advanced undersea networks in the world today, including the Atlantica-1, FLAG Atlantic-1, Atlantis-2 and Columbus-3 systems in the Atlantic; the China-US and Southern Cross transpacific systems; and the MAC and MAYA-1 systems in the Americas. Alcatel has the largest market share in both the global DWDM and submarine networks market segments, and is able to complement its global reach and presence with a true in-house, end-to-end, networking solutions.

About Alcatel Alcatel builds next generation networks, delivering integrated end-to-end voice and data solutions to established and new carriers, as well as enterprises and consumers worldwide. With 120,000 employees and sales of EURO 21.3 billion ($25.0 billion), Alcatel operates in more than 130 countries. For more information, visit Alcatel on Internet: http://www.alcatel.com
