Lucent Technologies to Provide High-power Undersea Laser Modules to Tyco Submarine Systems Ltd.

Projected Sales Worth $100 Million

Allentown, PA. Lucent Technologies (NYSE: LU) Microelectronics Group, the world leader in optoelectronics components for communications, today announced that it has been selected by Tyco Submarine Systems Ltd., (TSSL) to provide new high-power undersea laser modules for use in Tyco s undersea communications network systems.

Sales within the next eighteen months are expected to reach at least $100 million. The new modules deliver almost double the power of previous-generation products, substantially increasing bandwidth in high-speed communications systems. These latest products expand Lucent s leadership in delivering optoelectronic component solutions for the fast-growing undersea market. TSSL s selection of Lucent comes one year after an initial contract for previous-generation products that is expected to reach $150 million by May of this year. That contract was announced in December of 1998.

TSSL, a leading supplier of undersea communications network systems, will be the first to deploy Lucent s modules. By increasing the capacity of undersea transmission systems, TSSL will make it possible for communications service providers to satisfy the burgeoning demand for global Internet connectivity and other communications services.

"Our latest undersea components and our expertise in the development and manufacture of laser modules enable us to meet TSSL s high-reliability and certification requirements," said Dan DiLeo, president of the optoelectronics components business of Lucent s Microelectronics Group. "We re already planning next-generation components to operate at even higher power levels delivering even more bandwidth in the coming year."

The modules are used in undersea optical amplifiers, or repeaters, which are installed at many points along a fiber-optic cable route to boost the strength of digital signals that carry voice and data traffic. Called pump laser modules, they provide the energy needed to boost the photons that make up the transmission signal.

The previous generation 980-nm pump lasers operated between 70 to 85 milliwatts (mW). These latest devices operate at 120 mW -- almost double the power. All devices come with Lucent s 29-year lifetime rating needed to meet the ultra-stringent reliability demands of undersea systems. The 120-mW modules are expected to be available in the first quarter of this year.

Tyco Submarine Systems Ltd., a wholly owned subsidiary of Tyco International Ltd., is the only independent and fully integrated supplier of undersea communications systems and services. TSSL owns and operates the largest independent fleet of world class cable ships for the installation and maintenance of undersea communication network systems. Leading edge fiber optic technology is provided by the internationally distinguished TSSL Labs located in Eatontown, New Jersey. The completely integrated manufacturing capabilities of TSSL are highlighted by cable, repeater and transmission equipment manufacturing facilities located in New Jersey, New Hampshire, and Virginia. TSSL has combined these capabilities to successfully complete 85 undersea fiber optic networks, in excess of 350,000 kilometers of fiber optic cable connecting over 100 countries.
