ALCATEL AND ANRITSU SIGN AN AGREEMENT TO COOPERATE IN THE DEVELOPMENT OF TELECOMMUNICATIONS COMPONENTS AND SYSTEMS

Paris, France. Alcatel and Anritsu Corporation today signed an agreement to cooperate in the development of future high speed telecommunications components and systems. The agreement will enable the two companies to build on their combined market knowledge and technological capabilities to provide solutions to the needs of future generations of telecommunications systems.

Anritsu and Alcatel already have a history of cooperation in rapid telecommunications technology. For example, Anritsu has recently supplied test equipment for 24 base stations to Alcatel for use on the new SEA ME WE 3 submarine telecommunications system. This 36,000km long system links Europe, Asia and Australia. Alcatel is supplying part of the submarine equipment, the whole SDH (Synchronous Digital Hierarchy) equipment and the wavelength division multiplexing (WDM) equipment, as well as the network management for the total system.

The new agreement is a natural progression for both companies, allowing them to work more closely together on future projects, particularly in the development of very fast modules and devices.

Mr. Yasuo Nakagawa, President of Anritsu Corporation, said, "Anritsu is proud and delighted to be associated with a great company such as Alcatel. We believe that our component and testing capabilities provide an excellent vehicle for Alcatel to produce leading edge systems that will enhance the global network and speed communications around the world".

Mr. Christian Reinaudo, President of Alcatel Optics, commented "Alcatel has chosen to partner with Anritsu for a number of reasons. Its technical capabilities are of prime importance, but so is the company s ability to be a global supplier for both products and services. This is very important for a company such as Alcatel, with its operations spread around the earth".

About Alcatel Alcatel builds next-generation networks, delivering integrated end-to-end voice and data communications solutions to established and new carriers, as well as enterprises and consumers worldwide. It operates in over 130 countries, employs 120,000 people and has sales of US$25.0 billion.

About Anritsu Anritsu Corporation is one of the leading suppliers of telecom test and measurement solutions and high speed optical components for telecommunication applications. It has manufacturing operations on three continents, group companies in 18 countries, selling to over 100 countries, and employing approximately 5,300 people. In 1998, Anritsu s revenues were US$1.2 billion.
