RF Micro Devices to Supply Power Amplifier for Ericsson's First CDMA Handset

NEW ORLEANS. RF Micro Devices, Inc. (Nasdaq: RFMD), a leading provider of proprietary radio frequency integrated circuits (RFICs) for wireless communications applications, announced that it has received production orders to supply the RF2132 power amplifier (PA) to Ericsson (Nasdaq: ERICY) for use in their first cellular CDMA handset, the A1228c. For Ericsson, long a leader in infrastructure and mobile phones for other global standards, the new phone signals the company s entry into the fast growing CDMA market. The RF2132 power amplifier is a gallium arsenide (GaAs) heterojunction bipolar transistor (HBT) CDMA PA that provides high efficiency in a small, cost-effective package.

"This represents an important milestone in our business relationship with Ericsson and we are pleased to be a part of their first handset for the CDMA market," said Jerry Neal, executive vice president of sales, marketing and strategic development of RF Micro Devices. "We anticipate that our business relationship with Ericsson will continue to expand, particularly with the mobile phone groups."

"GaAs HBT technology has been recognized by the wireless marketplace as the most effective PA solution for mobile handsets," said Vic Steel, director of the PA product line for RF Micro Devices. "We believe that RFMD s experience and leadership in the design and manufacturing of GaAs HBT PAs and our capability to support volume production were contributing factors for Ericsson choosing the RFMD(TM) PA solution."

RF Micro Devices, Inc., an ISO 9001-certified manufacturer, designs, develops, manufactures and markets proprietary RFICs for wireless communications applications such as cellular and PCS phones, cordless phones, wireless LANs, wireless local loop handsets, industrial radios, wireless security systems and remote meter readers.
