JDS Uniphase Extends Amplification Product Line to Meet the Need for Higher Functionality and Increased Power

BALTIMORE. JDS Uniphase Corporation (Nasdaq: JDSU and TSE: JDU) today announced a significant expansion to its line of amplification products for telecommunications and CATV applications. These new products include diode pump lasers and Raman pumps, as well as new amplifier modules for metro and long-haul amplification.

In today s optical networks, as channel counts and transmission speeds increase, the need for amplification products with greater functionality and higher power increases as well. To meet these needs, JDS Uniphase has developed leading-edge technology from which next generation amplifier modules and components are being developed.

By combining its control electronics expertise with its optical amplifier technology, JDS Uniphase has introduced an amplifier specifically designed for metropolitan network applications. This optical amplifier uses high-speed digital signal processing technology intended to provide the transient control needed to minimize potential system instabilities found in high-density, dynamic networks.

JDS Uniphase has leveraged its fiber laser and component technologies to introduce a fiber laser Raman source that provides optical powers greater than 1.5W for pumping transmission fiber. This scalable approach is intended to provide a cost-effective solution for achieving high optical powers in various transmission bands.

This technology combination also produced a high-power optical amplifier for future CATV architectures with output power levels of 27 dBm and 30 dBm. These amplifiers use cladding-pumped fiber technology and are available in module, rack-mount or custom configuration. The architecture is scalable and can be used for CATV and telecommunications applications.

Another product announcement for Raman amplification is a new diode-multiplexed Raman pump that combines multiple wavelengths to provide up to 750 mW of optical power for Raman gain in the C-band. These pumps are intended for future WDM systems and longer transmission spans in optical networks.

Today, JDS Uniphase also announced the introduction of a full range of new amplifier components including: variable gain slope attenuators, fiber Bragg grating filters, fused fiber filters, sub-miniature tap couplers, and 980 nm pump laser chips and modules.

The new 980 nm pump modules have been designed to meet the exacting requirements of all telecommunications market segments. The module design incorporates proven high-reliability assembly technology to enable high-coupling efficiency and stable optical output power. Assembly processes allow the design to be utilized in submarine as well as terrestrial telecommunications systems. Using the current JDS Uniphase high-reliability G05 series laser chip, optical output powers in excess of 250mW are achieved and in the second half of 2000, 350mW optical output powers are expected to be available by inclusion of the new G06 series laser chip in the module. The unique design of the JDS Uniphase laser chip has allowed the module designers the flexibility to provide stable frequency operation without the use of fiber Bragg gratings, or very low noise, single frequency operation with a fiber Bragg grating.

``Our customers want more and more power with broader functionality in their amplifier modules and components. By integrating the expertise of many parts of the JDS Uniphase family, we are continually striving to provide our customers with amplifier products that can meet the demands created by new optical networking systems, said Jozef Straus, Co-Chairman, President and Chief Operating Officer of JDS Uniphase.

JDS Uniphase is a high-technology company that designs, develops, manufactures and distributes a comprehensive range of products for the growing fiberoptic communications market.
