KDF Receives Order For 643 GT Batch Sputtering System From Filtronic Compound Semiconductor

Orangeburg, NY. KDF, a leading supplier of new and remanufactured physical vapor deposition (PVD) batch in-line systems, today announced the sale of a 643 GT batch sputtering system to Filtronic Compound Semiconductor. Filtronic will use the 643 GT in the volume production of gallium arsenide (GaAs) semiconductors at the company s new Newton Aycliffe GaAs fab in Northeast England.

The 643 GT features a palletized batch processing area, allowing instantaneous changing of wafer sizes, which enables both front and back side GaAs wafer processing. The 643 GT is also a cost effective, versatile system with a small footprint -- the machine fits conveniently into an allocated space without the need to redesign Filtronic s existing manufacturing floor. Installation of the product is expected to take place this month, after which Filtronic will begin ramping up to volume production.

"The 600 series systems offer the production proven technology that our customers need," said Todd Plaisted, Director of Sales and Marketing for KDF. "We believe the 643 GT will enable Filtronic to reach its aggressive production goals."

In September 1999, Filtronic purchased the old Fujitsu DRAM Fabrication plant in County Durham, England. They have now set up a 6" GaAs production line for the volume manufacture of PHEMT devices, which will be used primarily in the growing mobile handset market. Compound Semiconductors Ltd. is among the world s first and largest GaAs semiconductor facilities for wireless applications.

GaAs, one of the emerging materials in the semiconductor industry, has been used in the production of semiconductors since the 1950s. The material is growing in popularity as a replacement for silicon for integrated circuits used in the telecommunications industry. Due to the explosion in demand for cell phones, the market for GaAs is growing rapidly.
