EMCORE Enters Into Agreement with Motorola on Wireless Electronic Materials Technology

Agreement includes the supply of MOCVD production tools, high volumes of electronic epitaxial wafers, and epitaxial wafer production technology to Motorola s CS-1 fab

Somerset, NJ. EMCORE announced today the conclusion of an agreement with Motorola to meet their requirements for epitaxial tools, wireless electronic materials and technology. The relationship includes supplying Motorola with epitaxial process technology and multiple MOCVD tools, as well as purchase orders for electronic device epitaxial wafers.

"We are excited about this agreement with one of the world s premier suppliers of GaAs devices for communications," said Reuben Richards, CEO and President of EMCORE. "This agreement validates EMCORE s business model, and shows the power of supplying a vertically integrated solution that enables our customers to quickly bring industry-leading technology to the market place."

Dr. Mark Wilson, Engineering Manager for CS-1, said, "We have been impressed with EMCORE s ability to provide high volumes of 100 mm pHEMT epitaxial wafers. EMCORE has been responsive in meeting our requirements for high performance and high yield. We are also planning to work closely with them on other epitaxial technologies. Presently EMCORE has been ramping up supply of 150 mm pHEMT wafers with a positive outlook "

EMCORE s Electronic Materials (E2M) foundry division has been supplying production quantities of pHEMT epitaxial wafers to Motorola s CS-1 fab for several months. These wafers have consistently met Motorola s stringent specifications with both high performance and high yield. This performance has supported Motorola s decision for placing a purchase order for two fully automated MOCVD production tools with EMCORE s TurboDisc division. Motorola also announced that EMCORE was awarded their Standard Supplier Designation, making EMCORE the only qualified supplier of MOCVD tools for Motorola s compound semiconductor factories. EMCORE will also transfer full pHEMT epi technology from their E2M foundry division to Motorola in order to ensure full compatibility between the wafers supplied by E2M and Motorola s internal production on the EMCORE tools.

Tom Miehe, EMCORE s Vice President of Sales and Marketing commented "EMCORE and Motorola have been cooperating closely to improve the quality and reduce the cost of epitaxial wafers for pHEMT applications. The tools they have selected have the industry s highest throughput and lowest cost of ownership for this and other device applications. As the backbone of our E2M foundry, these same tools give us an advantage in the epitaxial wafer marketplace, as evidenced by our rapidly increasing sales in this area."
