The Wireless Communications ICs Market Expected to Grow From $10.5 Billion in 2000 to $21.0 Billion by 2005

OYSTER BAY, N.Y. Although it is the cellular market which is driving the wireless component market, broadband technologies will also become an important segment of this wireless communication integrated circuit (IC) market, according to a new study from allied Business Intelligence. Chips for cellular/PCS applications lead the market today with 97% share and silicon remains a dominant technology with 86% share overall. However changes are evident in the silicon-realm as traditional BiCMOS, CMOS, SiGe, and bipolar processes are being pitted against each other. And, according to the report, "Wireless Communications Systems ICs" the former dark horse of the wireless world, MMDS, is now poised for explosive growth.

"ICs used in MMDS devices account for under 1% of the market in 2000 but the value of chips used in the application is expected to show impressive gains over the next five years," said ABI Senior Analyst and report author Andy Fuertes. "ICs for wireless LANs are also showing considerable growth and more importantly, the application is rendering itself a test bed for wide spread implementation of SiGe chips through Intersil s PRISM solution"

The overwhelming leader in the market today is CMOS, due to its role in the baseband sector, CMOS represents approximately 50% of the overall market. But considerable gains are expected on the part of SiGe, particularly in the IF sectors of wireless devices. Silicon-germanium will be less successful in the power amplifier sector, mainly because of power-added efficiency of GaAs devices.

SiGe will be particularly attractive as cellular and other OEMs begin to implement Bluetooth and GPS functionality in their devices. Today the RF/analog section of GPS chips represents 21% of the GPS IC market but these functions are expected to survive integration into host systems longer then the baseband GPS functions.
