Uniroyal Technology Corporation Commences Construction For Facility Expansion

Source: Uniroyal Technology Corporation

Sarasota, FL. Construction efforts have begun for the expansion of Uniroyal Technology Corporation s (Nasdaq: UTCI) high brightness light emitting diode (HB LED) capacity at its facility in Tampa, Florida. Build out of the remaining 33,000 sq. ft. of its 77,000 sq.ft. state-of-the-art facility includes expanding capacity for the epitaxial, fabrication and testing processes as well as increasing the facility infrastructure and support. The expansion, which is expected to be complete in mid-2001, also includes a research and development facility.

When complete, the new infrastructure will have the capability to support approximately twenty new reactors for the production of HB LEDs. Orders have been placed for reactors with the first reactor scheduled for delivery in January and an additional four reactors to arrive in the April to June time frame.

A new state-of-the-art research and development facility will also be constructed during the expansion. Uniroyal recently announced the staffing of its R & D team with top scientists in the optoelectronics industry. This team includes scientists from Sandia National Laboratories, the University of California at Santa Barbara, and, most recently, Dr. Christian Wetzel from the High Tech Research Center at Meijo University in Nagoya, Japan.

"We are moving rapidly at Uniroyal Optoelectronics to increase capacity and expand our technology base for optoelectronics products. Our commitment to position Uniroyal to be a premier participant in the compound semiconductor industry is evident by our investment spending and recruitment efforts," said Robert L. Soran, President and Chief Operating Officer of Uniroyal Technology Corporation. "We are making great strides both at Uniroyal Optoelectronics and Sterling Semiconductor."

Uniroyal Technology s Compound Semiconductors & Optoelectronics business segment includes Uniroyal Optoelectronics and Sterling Semiconductor, Inc. Uniroyal Optoelectronics manufactures high brightness light emitting diodes (HB-LEDs), a rapidly growing market with applications such as traffic signals, indoor/outdoor signage and automotive applications. Sterling Semiconductor is a leading producer of silicon carbide (SiC) substrates, epitaxial thin films on SiC substrates and is developing SiC devices for wireless communications, industrial process control, and power amplification. Well-known brand names in Uniroyal s Coated Fabrics and Specialty Adhesives segments include NAUGAHYDE(R) and NAUGASOFT(TM) in coated fabrics and, SILAPRENE(R), HYDRA FAST-EN(R) and GUNTHER ULTRA/BOND(R) in adhesives.
