Lehigh Valley, PA. Daido Air Products Electronics, Inc. (DAP)-a joint venture between Air Products and Chemicals, Inc. (NYSE:APD) and Air Water, Inc.-has opened a new facility at its Specialty Chemicals Center in Tsukuba, Japan (near Tokyo) for handling organometallic chemicals used in compound semiconductor manufacturing.

The facility provides DAP with enhanced local organometallic transfill and analytical capabilities, with future opportunity for chemical production. Customers will benefit from DAP s rapid product analysis services, improved response time for processing new orders, custom container fill capability, and other technical and applications services.

DAP sources its organometallic chemicals from Epichem Ltd. (with headquarters in Bromborough, U.K. and Allentown, Pa.), a leading supplier of these vital products to the global semiconductor industry. DAP is the exclusive supplier of Epichem organometallic products in Japan, a cooperative relationship that extends back to 1993 when Air Products began marketing these products in Japan.

In recent years, demand for organometallic chemicals-such as trimethylindium, trimethylgallium, and trimethylaluminum-has grown dramatically, as compound semiconductors are increasingly required in the booming cellular phone, high-speed communications, high-brightness LED and other markets.

In addition to organometallic chemicals, DAP s Tsukuba Specialty Chemicals Center also handles Air Products Schumacher line of specialty electronic chemicals. A business unit of Air Products Electronics Division headquartered in Carlsbad, Calif., Schumacher is a leading worldwide supplier of ultra-high purity chemicals and chemical delivery equipment systems to the semiconductor industry, providing chemicals for CVD dielectrics and metals as well as for diffusion and ion implant applications.

Commenting on the enhanced local supply reliability which the new transfill facility provides, Isamu Handa, president of DAP, said, "We have grown rapidly through the introduction of specialty products-electronic gases and chemicals-used in the manufacture of advanced semiconductors. With the market for organometallic chemicals in Japan estimated to be U.S. $25 million, our new capabilities at Tsukuba will further enhance our ability to provide full service to our customers and build on our success."

DAP (www.dap.co.jp) is a leading supplier of gases, chemicals, equipment and services to the Japanese electronics industry, growing 20 percent per year since it was founded in 1997. Air Products partner in the DAP venture, Air Water Inc., (www.awi.co.jp), is Japan s second largest industrial gases company. Air Water Inc. was formed on April 1, 2000, the result of a merger between Daido Hoxan Inc. and Kyodo Oxygen Co., Ltd. The complementary strengths that each partner brings to the joint venture have made DAP a formidable competitor in one of the largest markets for electronic gases and chemicals in the world.

Air Products and Chemicals, Inc. (www.airproducts.com) is the world s only combined gases and chemicals company. Founded nearly 60 years ago, the business has annual revenues of more than $5 billion and operations in over 30 countries. Through the understanding of its 17,000 employees around the world, the company has developed lasting relationships with over 100,000 customers and has ensured market leadership in key industry sectors globally.

EDITOR S NOTE (background on Daido Air Products): DAP has approximately 35 onsite nitrogen production facilities at customer sites, a Specialty Gases Center in Amagasaki (including silane transfill capability and recently announced nitrogen trifluoride transfill capability), a Specialty Chemicals Center in Tsukuba (including the new organometallic chemicals transfill/analytical facility), and numerous specialty gas/chemical warehouses and technical support centers located around Japan on or near customer sites. DAP s headquarters and its engineering and core research and development activities are located in Sakai (near Osaka), with a branch office in Tokyo and sales offices throughout Japan. DAP also draws upon the engineering and manufacturing centers of parent company Air Water, Inc. for merchant bulk gases and certain engineered products and services.
