Infineon Technologies Announces Samsung using New Linear Down-Conversion Mixer Family for Mobile Communications Applications in Next Generation Wireless Terminals

Source: Infineon Technologies

Munich, Germany. Infineon Technologies today announced a new family of linear down-conversion mixer integrated circuits (ICs) for mobile communication applications. The company also announced that Samsung Electronics Company, LTD, a world leader in electronics, will use the new Infineon mixer ICs in its next generation wireless terminals such as cell phones and modem-enabled personal digital assistants (PDAs).

Based on Infineon s Gallium Arsenide (GaAs) technology, the new mixer ICs combine excellent linearity with low noise figures at low power consumption. In mobile communication devices, GaAs chips offer the best solution for the receiver, radio frequency (RF) front-end, where high-linearity components are required. These new Mixer ICs reduce distortion to improve data transfer rates for current mobile applications, such as wireless e-mail with a PDA, and future applications such as wireless e-commerce and bank transactions.

"We chose Infineon because of their vast experience with radio frequency technology and linear down-converters, their established leadership in Gallium Arsenide process technology, and their ability to meet our high volume requirements," said Dales Sohn, Senior Manager Corporate Planning Team at Samsung. "Consistent with our past experience, our design engineers benefited from the quick response time and expertise of the Infineon team."

"We are very pleased that Samsung is using our new mixer ICs in their next generation wireless terminals," said Günter Weinberger, Senior Vice President and General Manager of the Wireless Group at Infineon Technologies. "The development of this family of mixer ICs further demonstrates Infineon s strength in coupling advanced process technologies with comprehensive RF design expertise."

About the technology

The new mixer family is ideal for down-conversion in all common mobile communication systems such as cellular and PCS-CDMA according to IS-95 (North American standards), K-PCS (South Korean standard), as well as N-CDMA and W-CDMA (Japanese standards). The family consists of two ICs - the CMY213 and the CMY212. The CMY213 is the low-power version of the CMY212 with an operating current of only 8.0 mA. Because it requires less operating current than the CMY212, the CMY213 is ideal for applications with stringent power consumption requirements.

Price and availability

The family is available in a small, cost effective SCT598-packages (SOT-23-derivative). The mixer ICs CMY212 and CMY213 are available in volume quantities. Pricing in 10K quantities is Euro 176.40 per 100 pieces.
