FITEL Technologies, Inc. Set to Open Amplification Products Development Center

Source: FITEL Technologies, Inc.

Clinton, NJ. FITEL Technologies, Inc., a leader in the development of products for the optical communications market, today announced the opening of an amplification products Development Center to support the growing Erbium Doped Fiber Amplifier (EDFA) and Raman markets. The facility, which is scheduled to open in April 2001, will be located in Warwick, Rhode Island and will work in conjunction with both Fitel and its affiliate, Optigain.

The 12,000 sq ft facility will employ approximately 40 people and will be responsible for the research and development of next generation, advanced Raman solutions for high speed, long haul optical data transmissions. Using Fitel and Optigain s proficiency in developing and integrating new technologies for the growing optical communications industry, the facility will allow Fitel to further it s commitment to Raman amplification. When used in conjunction with EDFAs, Raman amplification can be used to achieve a more cost effective optical network by increasing signal clarity and expanding the distance between regeneration points.

"This is an excellent example of Fitel s commitment to Raman amplification," stated Raja Parvez, president of Optigain and the new development facility. "By focusing on Raman technologies, we re providing our customers with a flexible solution to expand existing networks. Ultimately, this allows system manufacturers to achieve cost savings for high speed transmission systems."

Fitel Technologies provides a full suite of technologies to support Raman amplification, including the 14xx nanometer (nm) pump lasers that are the core of the Raman module. These 14xx lasers supply the high optical output power needed to achieve signal amplification within the transmission fiber. Fitel Technologies and its parent company Furukawa have a strong expertise and history in developing and manufacturing high-powered pump lasers, including a 400mW pump that will debut at this year s Optical Fiber Communication conference in Anaheim, CA.

"We have been at the forefront of this technology and we intend to continue our growth in this area," explained Gerry Bezems, VP of Marketing and Sales for Fitel Technologies. "With this new facility, we can continue to use our expertise in active and passive technology and integration to develop next generation, high performance Raman modules and amplifiers."

Both the new 400mW 1480nm laser diode and the Raman module will be on display at this year s Optical Fiber Communication conference in Anaheim, CA., being held March 19-21.

Optigain, Inc. is the manufacturer of Erbium Doped Fiber Amplifiers, Raman modules and related equipment for the telecommunications market. Optigain, Inc. was founded in 1990 and is based in Peace Dale, Rhode Island.

Fitel Technologies, Inc., is a wholly owned company that develops and markets a wide variety of fiber optic and optoelectronics solutions by The Furukawa Electric Company, Ltd., of Japan.
