Uniroyal Technology Corporation's Optoelectronics Segment Demonstrates Highest Brightness Levels in Industry

Source: Uniroyal Technology Corporation

Sarasota, FL. Uniroyal Technology Corporation (Nasdaq: UTCI) today announced that its Uniroyal Optoelectronics (UOE) division s recent high brightness blue LED products are exhibiting brightness levels ranging from 3.5 to 4 milliwatts in die form which represents the highest brightness levels achieved by any LED manufacturer. When conventionally packaged, the expected lamp power output is between 8 and 10 milliwatts providing an exceptional product for high brightness applications such as outdoor displays, signage and traffic signals.

The recent significant increase in power levels of UOE s high brightness blue products is attributable to the development of UOE s Research & Development team in Tampa, Florida. The experience and technical knowledge of the team s members in semiconductor processes and properties has led to significantly increased brightness levels in a very short period of time. UOE s R&D team includes members who came to UOE from Sandia National Laboratory, Meijo University in Japan, the University of California in Santa Barbara, the University of Florida and Bell Labs/Lucent.

"The Optoelectronics team has done an outstanding job of rapidly ramping up production of exceptional products to meet our strategic plan," said Robert L. Soran, President and Chief Operating Officer of Uniroyal Technology Corporation. "The addition of the R&D group has been instrumental to product advancements made over the last several months. The brightness levels we are currently demonstrating provide Uniroyal the opportunity to be the leader in the high brightness LED market," noted Mr. Soran.

Recent industry forecasts indicate that the demand for high brightness LEDs remains strong as evidenced by a 54% increase over 1999. Applications utilizing very high brightness LEDs continue to increase as higher brightness levels result in more cost efficient conversions to LED lighting from conventional incandescent methods.

"Brightness levels in the range being demonstrated by Uniroyal Optoelectronics promote the development of a number of light mediated biomedical and dental procedures," noted David G. Pelka, Director of Product Development, Teledyne Lighting and Display Products, Hawthorne, California. "In many cases, the use of high brightness LEDs will replace expensive laser sources used in dental curing procedures and as treatment for a number of medical conditions," said Mr. Pelka.

Uniroyal Technology s Compound Semiconductors & Optoelectronics business segment includes Uniroyal Optoelectronics, Sterling Semiconductor, Inc., and NorLux Corp. Uniroyal Optoelectronics manufactures high brightness light emitting diodes (HB-LEDs), a rapidly growing market with applications such as traffic signals, indoor/outdoor signage and automotive applications.
