Mitsubishi Electric Introduces Two New GaAs HBT Amplifiers That Reduce Overall Package Size For PCS/Cellular PA's By 35 Percent

Source: Mitsubishi Electric

SUNNYVALE, Calif. Keeping pace with the increased demand by its customers to address size and cost constraints inherent in today s PCS cellular marketplace, Mitsubishi Electric and Electronic USA, Inc. has rolled out two new radio frequency amplifiers for the PCS cellular phone market. This new chipset boasts increased performances over the previous model, with a 25 percent reduction in idle current and a 35 percent reduction in overall size. The BA01202 is designed for the 1.9GHz CDMA band and is complimented by the BA01203, designed for the 800MHz CDMA band.

The cellular marketplace continues to grow at a rapid pace with increased pressure on semiconductor suppliers to meet the need for smaller, efficient and more integrated chipsets, while still maintaining all performance and voltage requirements. This latest roll out from Mitsubishi Electric addresses these challenges by using Mitsubishi s proprietary gallium arsenide (GaAs) hetro-bipolar junction technology (HBT).

``This manufacturing technology has enabled Mitsubishi Electric to tackle both size and cost issues while retaining our competitive advantages in battery management, linearity and overall chip performance, said Bryon Gutow, senior product marketing manager for microwave and RF products at Mitsubishi Electric & Electronics USA, Inc. ``The US CDMA cellular phone market is demanding better and smaller amplifiers. The introduction of this chipset keeps us ahead of the curve as far as meeting these demands.

By using the HBT GaAs process, Mitsubishi Electric is able to offer a complete chipset solution for the 1.9GHz/800MHz CDMA market. While meeting the stringent spectral linearity requirements for CDMA cellular phones, these amplifiers boast the following features:

-- Low Idq of 60mA -- 3.2V operation -- 25dB gain -- 6x6 module package -- No Negative Voltage Generator requirement -- 50 ohm input and output matched

Packaging, Availability and Pricing

Mitsubishi s BA01202 and BA01203 GaAs HBT RF amplifiers are in volume production and are available for immediate sampling as a combined 800/1900 MHz chipset. Pricing is $6 for the chipset in 10,000-unit quantities.
