Cielo Communications to Announce Technology Breakthrough With 10 Gbps 1.3 Micron VCSEL At CLEO Conference

Broomfield, CO. Latest Accomplishment Demonstrates the Practicality of the 1.3 Micron VCSEL as a Cost-Effective Alternative for High-Bandwidth Applications

Cielo Communications, an industry leader in Vertical Cavity Surface Emitting Laser (VCSEL) technology and integrated optical subsystems, today announced an innovation in laser design with its directly modulated 10 Gbps 1310 nm VCSEL.

The details of this achievement will be presented in a paper this week at the Conference on Lasers and Electro-Optics (CLEO) in Baltimore. This breakthrough will contribute to simplified system design and lowered optical interconnect costs for short- and intermediate-reach applications requiring bandwidths in excess of 10 Gbps.

"The development of a 10 Gbps 1310 nm VCSEL is a landmark achievement for both Cielo and our industry," said Bob Mayer, vice president of marketing for Cielo. "This demonstrates the capability of bringing the advantages of a VCSEL, including low cost, small size, and low power dissipation, to 10 Gbps single mode fiber optical interconnects. This technology will provide an ideal optical source for applications such as SONET OC-192 and 10 Gigabit Ethernet links."

At the CLEO presentation where this announcement will be made, Ryan Naone, Ph.D., will report that the Cielo VCSEL ran error-free at 10 Gbps over 10 km of single mode fiber. The single mode VCSEL device showed a lasing peak of 1289 nm and sustained lasing up to a temperature of 125(degree)C with a spectral width of 0.05 nm. At room temperature, the maximum output power of a single-mode device is 1mW, and multi-mode devices are capable of output up to 2.5mW.

Cielo leveraged its commercially mature GaAs-based molecular beam epitaxy technology to achieve this latest accomplishment. Cielo s 1310 nm VCSEL uses an active region based on Indium Gallium Arsenide Nitride (InGaAsN) to create 1310 nm emission. Cielo s technology also resolves many materials issues that had limited other 1.3 micron VCSEL technologies such as wafer-bonding or Indium Phosphide (InP) approaches.

Network equipment that takes advantage of VCSEL-based optical sub-systems can offer increased performance at a reduced price, when compared to systems using the same modules based on edge-emitting lasers. The documented advantages of VCSELs over edge-emitting lasers in the areas of ease of manufacturing, packaging, alignment, testing costs, and lower power dissipation, which are now available at 1310 nm, have the potential to dramatically lower the cost structure of 10 Gbps short- and intermediate-reach optical sub-systems. Cielo plans on incorporating high speed 1310 nm VCSELs into a series of integrated optical subsystems to be announced later this year.
