Tecstar Inc. Selected to Develop a 40% Efficient Solar Cell for Concentrator Arrays

Source: Tecstar Inc.

City of Industry, CA. Tecstar Inc. today announced that its promising approach in developing a 40% efficient Concentrator Solar Cell, critical to both government and commercial satellite designs, was selected by NASA Glen Research Center.

"The central objective of this research is to develop and demonstrate critical technology elements of a 40% efficient, lightweight solar cell. Under concentration these cells will enable more than 1000 W/kg specific power, with techniques that are employed to significantly reduce mass and cost," reported Patrick L. Park, Tecstar vice president for Marketing and Sales.

Tecstar has appointed Dr. Charlie Chu as principal investigator. Tecstar has partnered with The California Institute of Technology (CALTECH), Dr. Harry Atwater, as co-investigator; and with National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL) through Dr. Mark Wanlass, also, as co-investigator. This effort is planned to span 36 months and will investigate both the device physics, advanced structure designs, and deliver prototype solar cells for testing.

Tecstar is a Compound Semiconductor company providing key enabling technologies to the Satellite Power and Optoelectronics industries. Key products include EPI for High Brightness LEDs, HBTs, VCSELs and other related compound semiconductor devices as well as solar cells, CICs and panels for satellite applications.

Tecstar also operates divisions supporting the aircraft and spacecraft industries. Together, Tecstar provides products worldwide and delivers to the major optoelectronics device manufacturers and all major satellite integrators.
