Cielo s 10 Gbps 1310 nm Serial Transponder Offers Customers a Low Power, High Performance Interconnect Solution in a Low-Cost, Small-Form-Factor Package

BROOMFIELD, Colo. Cielo Communications, an industry leader in Vertical Cavity Surface Emitting Laser (VCSEL) technology and integrated optical subsystems, today announced the release of the first 10 Gbps VCSEL-based 1310 nm serial transponder for high bandwidth optical interconnects.

The transponder provides a reduction in cost, power consumption and board space to enable high-density 10-gigabit solutions and is the newest product in Cielo s platform of optical interconnects, which includes the 10 Gbps 850 nm serial transponder.

"Our latest addition to the transponder product line offers standard-compliant, industry-leading performance for 1310 nm optical interconnects in a cost-effective, small-footprint package," said Jeff Bisberg, product marketing manager at Cielo. "Cielo s strategy is to lower the basic cost structure of optical components with product solutions that optimize value without compromising performance by integrating our industry-leading VCSEL technology with custom optical devices and electronics."

Cielo s compact 200-pin transponder features a jitter filter, high-speed serializer, laser driver and a 10 Gbps 1310 nm VCSEL on the transmit side, while the receiver incorporates a PIN photodiode, transimpedance amplifier, limiting amplifier, clock and data recovery (CDR) circuit, and deserializer to complete the module. The SC or LC pigtailed optical connections enable flexible positioning in tight layouts. The small, low profile footprint transponder provides customers with a significant reduction in board space and power dissipation when compared to current solutions. These features provide customers with a reliable, high performance solution for dense 10 Gbps optical interconnect applications.

"Introducing this line of 10 Gbps transponders, Cielo enters a rapidly growing and highly competitive market," said Vladimir Kozlov, senior analyst for RHK s global optical components service. "Having a 1.3 micron VCSEL as a source laser significantly differentiates their product from the competition and opens a window of opportunity to build up a customer base before the established system vendors adopt alternate technologies."

The transponder is targeted at standards-compliant optical networking markets that include systems such as switches, routers, add/drop multiplexers and broadband interconnects. For added flexibility, the transponder features a switchable bit-order function for operation in both Ethernet and SONET environments.

Cielo s optical transponder is designed to be fully compliant with the OIF-SFI4-01.0 implementation agreement for a common electrical interface between SONET framer and SerDes parts for OC-192 interfaces with versions that support OIF, Ethernet, SONET/SDH and Fibre Channel standards for 10 Gbps 1310 nm optical interconnects. The module is also compliant with the 200-pin Small Footprint OC-192 Transponder Multi-Source Agreement to enable rapid design-in for optical system developers.

Pricing and Availability

Cielo s 10 Gbps 1310 nm Serial Transponder is priced at less than $8,000 in small volumes. The transponder will sample to development partners in Q3 2001.
