Bandwidth9 Collaborates With Corning Incorporated to Deliver Superior Signal Quality for Metro Carriers

Source: Bandwidth9

Companies Focusing on Interoperability of Bandwidth9 s MetroFlex Tunable Transmitter and Corning MetroCor Optical Fiber

Baltimore, MD. Bandwidth9, a leader in flexible, reliable, and cost-effective optical components and subsystems that make metro networks more manageable and profitable, today announced that it is working with Corning Incorporated (NYSE: GLW) to explore combined solutions that reduce costs and magnify deployment flexibility for metro optical carriers.

The solutions are based on Corning(R) MetroCor(TM) optical fiber and Bandwidth9 s MetroFlex(TM) metro-optimized tunable transmitter module. Initial performance testing results reported by Bandwidth9 and Corning reveal that the two products maintain excellent optical signal quality over metro application distances.

Charles Duvall, Bandwidth9 s senior director of applications, stated, "Light dispersion is a key challenge in optical networks because the quality of the signal degrades over distance. Corning MetroCor fiber compensates for this dispersion, reducing or eliminating the need for discrete dispersion compensation components."

MetroCor fiber meets the telecommunications industry s needs by enabling metropolitan networks to carry high-density data traffic while reducing complexity and network costs. Allowing for a seamless transition to higher data rate applications, MetroCor fiber is compatible with single-mode fibers. By reducing the electrical regeneration and dispersion compensation required to maintain signal integrity, MetroCor fiber directly addresses the significant bandwidth growth rate that metropolitan areas and private enterprise networks are currently facing.

Bandwidth9 s MetroFlex subsystems are complete, tunable optical transmitters that enable profitable metro networks by giving optical systems vendors and their customers more complete and reliable control over bandwidth provisioning. MetroFlex modules remotely tune and lock to a specific wavelength 50 times faster and with far greater precision than competing products, giving optical systems designers and their customers more application and deployment flexibility. They can tune across more than 40 wavelengths in the 1550nm and 1600nm optical bands (C and L bands). MetroFlex modules are the industry s smallest, most cost-effective fully integrated tunable transmitters. In addition, MetroFlex modules reduce optical systems vendors time to market by as much as 90 percent-from six to nine months to as little as two weeks-when compared with standalone laser components.

"Pairing Bandwidth9 s metro-optimized tunable laser with Corning s state-of-the-art fiber leverages the technological strengths of both products," said Hatch Graham, Bandwidth9 chairman and CEO. "Together, Corning and Bandwidth9 can help metro carriers build and deploy the most cost-effective and technologically advanced DWDM systems available today, and this partnership will enable both companies to offer a more complete solution to their customers." The companies intend to continue advancing the interoperability of MetroCor fiber and MetroFlex, making further test results and application design information available later this year.
