Boston, MA. Starting from a low penetration level of 6.93% in 2000, the region will expand at a compounded annual growth rate of 20% in the next five years, increasing its wireless penetration to 15.60%.

In a new three-part Report titled "Asia-Pacific Wireless Market Overview 2000-2005," the Yankee Group uses its proprietary model to lay out the overall forecasts of mobile phone subscribers by technology on a country-by-country basis for 12 major markets in the Asia-Pacific region.

In Part 1 of the Report, the Yankee Group designs a well-balanced forecast model for wireless subscriber growth in the region, and provides an in-depth analysis of the regional subscriber distribution, technology shifts, and market drivers. Besides the robust economic growth and an expanding addressable population base, the key drivers for mobile adoption in the region are telecom deregulation, prepaid services, decreasing handset prices and service charges, and the development of mobile data services.

Over the next five years, the most obvious business opportunities in Asia-Pacific will come from the buildup of new networks due to rapid wireless take-up.

According to Larry Wan, an analyst with the Yankee Group s Wireless/Mobile Asia-Pacific research and consulting practice, "Approximately 40% of the global wireless infrastructure spending from 2001 to 2005 will be generated in the region--in particular, from Japan and China." Parts 2 and 3 focus on the profiles of the 12 leading markets in the region (Japan, China, Korea, Taiwan, Australia, Hong Kong, Singapore, Malaysia, the Philippines, Thailand, India, and Indonesia), including an update and overview on the economic outlook, regulatory landscape, wireless growth, and 3G developments for each country.
