AGERE SYSTEMS TO PROVIDE NEW HIGH-POWER UNDERSEA PUMP LASERS TO TYCOM; PROJECTED SALES WORTH $70 MILLION

Source; Agere Systems

Allentown, PA. Agere Systems today announced that TyCom has selected Agere s new 980 nanometer (nm) pump lasers for use in -TyCom s undersea optical amplifiers. This design win, valued at $70 million over the next 12 months, is part of a three-year agreement that TyCom signed earlier this year with Agere to supply optical components for use in building the TyCom Global Network, expected to be the world s most extensive and technologically advanced undersea optical network.

"This announcement brings together two leaders in their respective spaces - one in optoelectronic components and the other in submarine networks," said Dan DiLeo, executive vice president of Agere s Optoelectronics division. "Agere s experience in undersea optical products makes it an excellent fit for TyCom as the company builds out its undersea network."

Phase 1 of the TyCom Global Network is expected to span 90,000 kilometers and offer multi-terabit, or trillions of bits per second, capacity to more than 30 major cities around the world.

"We re moving beyond our role as the world s leading undersea network provider to become a global network operator with the TyCom Global Network," said Claire Calandra, executive vice-president and chief operating officer of TyCom. "Agere s pump laser products will help ensure that TyCom s network provides the highest capacity and performance in global communications service."

Agere s new 200 milliwatt device, called the LP200, is among the industry s highest power 980 nm pump lasers. The laser is used in undersea optical amplifiers, or repeaters, which are installed along a fiber-optic cable route to boost the strength of digital signals that carry voice and data traffic. The LP200 is implemented as part of an erbium-doped fiber amplifier, which permits direct amplification of an optical signal without the need for electrical conversion.

"An erbium-doped fiber amplifier is the engine that powers a signal across a transmission route, and the pump laser is the high-octane gas," said DiLeo. "Increasing the pump s output power will allow for an increase in the number of transmission signals, or channels, that can be amplified."

The LP200 is an uncooled, Fabry-Perot pump laser with an external fiber Bragg grating for wavelength stabilization. The gallium arsenide-based laser has a drive current of 350 milliamps.

"The cost of dropping equipment thousands of feet into the ocean requires components that are extremely dependable and can meet the performance demands for submarine applications," said DiLeo. Agere has a long history in developing undersea-qualified pump lasers, and offers a dedicated design and manufacturing team for submarine solutions in its Reading, Pa. facility. "We rigorously test our submarine products to ensure the durability and reliability demanded by our customers," he said.
