Fujitsu Quantum Device and Nortel Networks agree on joint specifications of 10Gbps receiver devices for optical communication

Source: Nortel Networks

LONDON. Nortel Networks and Fujitsu Quantum Devices, Ltd. have agreed on joint specifications for high-performance receiver devices for use in 10 gigabits-per-second (Gbps) optical communications products.

Optical receivers are electronic components that receive optical signals propagated down an optical fiber and change them into electrical signals. These receivers must have wide bandwidth and high sensitivity in order to realize high quality performance in ultra high speed (10 Gbps and up) optical telecommunications systems. With various kinds of 10 Gbps receiver modules in the market (package outline, pin assignment, shape of high speed signal input/output), there have been no standards for these types of devices. The receiver modules in this agreement contain an Avalanche Photo Diode (APD) and a broadband, low-noise preamp integrated in a small package with SMP connectors. This agreement on joint specifications between Fujitsu Quantum Devices and Nortel Networks provides customers with two sources for high-performance devices with common package outline and pin allocation for common board layout. The new receiver devices are designed to meet the requirements of the OC-192 SONET and STM-64 SDH (Synchronous Digital Hierarchy) standards. Sample products are expected to be available in October 2001, and volume production is expected to start in January 2002.

Fujitsu Quantum Devices is one of the world s leading companies in the compound semiconductor field, a key technology underlying the Internet society in the 21st century. Compound semiconductors have higher electron mobility, superior sensitivity, and better efficiency than semiconductors made from silicon. Fujitsu Quantum Devices is involved in the development, manufacture, and sales of Lightwave, Microwave, and GaAs IC compound semiconductor products using the latest technology. Sales divisions in North America (FCSI, www.fcsi.fujitsu.com), the United Kingdom (FQDE), and Hong Kong (FQDS) help to develop the business worldwide. Design and manufacturing processes are ISO9001 and ISO14001 approved. For additional information visit www.fqd.fujitsu.com. Nortel Networks Optical Components is one of the largest optical component business globally, and a world leader in design, development and manufacture of high-value modules for optical networks, including those for 10 and 40 Gbps systems. Offices are located in Ottawa, Ontario; Boston, Mass.; San Jose, Calif.; Raleigh, N.C.; Harlow and Paignton, UK; and Zurich, Switzerland. Nortel Networks is a global leader in networking and communications solutions and infrastructure for service providers and corporations. The Company is at the forefront of transforming how the world communicates, exchanges information and profits from the high-performance Internet through capabilities spanning the Optical Internet, Wireless Internet, Intelligent Internet and IP (Internet Protocol) technologies and services.
