Sarasota, FL. Sterling Semiconductor, Inc., a subsidiary of Uniroyal Technology Corporation (Nasdaq: UTCI), announced today that it has been awarded an R&D contract from the U.S. Army related to advanced silicon carbide semiconductor devices. The contract is for approximately $746,000.

The contract is aimed at developing a unique way of applying epitaxial thin films to silicon carbide substrates produced by Sterling. These films are the building blocks of a wide variety of semiconductor devices and further development of their specifications is important to applying silicon carbide semiconductor technology to military and commercial electronic applications.

"The fact that the Army is relying on Sterling to fulfill this contract requirement is another indication of the quality of Sterling s technology and ability to provide results for both military and commercial customers," said Robert L. Soran, President and Chief Operating Officer of Uniroyal Technology Corporation. "Sterling now has seven active contracts with the Army, Navy, and Air Force related to making advances in silicon carbide technology to support our national defense. In each case, the programs also parallel our path to market for commercial products and can help accelerate the time-to- market of advanced silicon carbide epitaxy and devices."

The contract is a Phase II Small Business Innovation and Research (SBIR) award following a successful Phase I completed by Sterling.
