Philips Semiconductors and Chalmers University Commence Joint R&D Program for SiC RF Transistors

Source: The Swedish Research Council

Philips Semiconductors in Nijmegen, the Netherlands, and Chalmers University of Technology in Gothenburg, Sweden, have announced that they are joining efforts in R&D of SiC RF transistors. As a part of the agreement, Philips is sharing its SiC expertise and transfering dedicated processing equipment to Chalmers. The joint Philips-Chalmers programme will focus primarily on SiC MOSFET processing and products.

Philips has achieved extremely high channel mobility, enabling SiC MOSFET to be used for RF applications. The transistors are aimed at frequencies up to 10 GHz for high power basestations for mobile communication. The joint R&D activities will be located at the Microtechnology Center MC2 at Chalmers University of Technology. Project leader on the MC2 side is Professor Herbert Zirath.

Philips Semiconductors has a leading position in the world of RF communications. With a history in RF discrete semiconductors extending back more than 50 years, Philips has been a major contributor in innovative solutions and technologies to carry RF communications forward into the 21st century. Philips discrete products ranging from single components to complete RF modules, are based on the most advanced process, assembly and packaging technologies in the world today.

Chalmers University of Technology was founded in 1829. Chalmers Microtechnology Center MC2 is a leading research institute and has a high reputation for its research on high speed devices. MC2 is located in a new building close to the city centre of Gotenburg. The actual heart of the Microtechnology Center is a 1.000  sq.meter cleanroom, containing separate areas from class 1 up to class 1000, that are all tailor made for research in microtechnology.
