Emcore MOCVD reactors to boost laser output at Nova Crystals

Emcore has announced the sale of two Discovery LDM (laser diode machine) production tools to Nova Crystals, Inc. of San Jose, CA. The two reactors will be used to support the manufacturing and development of Nova Crystals growing line of high speed, long-wavelength PICSEL lasers and InGaAs-on-Si APDs. PICSELs combine the features of conventional VCSELs with the merits of edge emitting lasers, while significantly extending the functionality of these devices through photonic integration technologies. InGaAs-on-Si APDs combine the light absorption advantages of InGaAs with the beneficial physical properties of silicon. The unique high gain-bandwidth and low noise behavior of the InGaAs-on-Silicon APD can provide 4-8dB of additional sensitivity in fiber-optic communication applications.

"Emcore?s tools provide unprecedented reliability and accurate control of the temperature and uniformity of epitaxial material processes," stated Tom Miehe, Vice President of Sales and Marketing at Emcore. "By virtually eliminating downtime and ensuring low maintenance, Emcore s MOCVD tools provide customers with complete confidence that they will achieve their epitaxial production goals without technical impedances, and at a low cost."

The Discovery LDM features Emcore s innovative RealTemp advanced wafer temperature measurement and control system which, Steve Hummel, Director of Engineering of Nova Crystals, cites as a key decision-making factor. "Control of temperature has been a challenge in III-V epitaxial production for the industry as a whole," reports Hummel. "Emcore s RealTemp solution has addressed these customer concerns for accuracy as well as uniformity of temperature measurement. This is a powerful tool that makes a significant contribution towards quick development of epitaxial processes. It enables us to cost effectively develop and manufacture materials while minimizing obstacles related to process stability and control." Michele K. Boudway
