Compound semiconductor equipment makers feature in Europe's top 15 list

European chip equipment suppliers gained market share in 2001 against US and Japanese suppliers, according to a new survey released by VLSI Research. The total sales for European suppliers were $4.44 billion in 2001, a 27% decline from 2000. At the same time sales by US suppliers declined 40%, while those of Japanese suppliers decreased by 30%.

ASML and ASM International, which VLSI classifies as "traditional semiconductor equipment suppliers" ranked number one and two in Europe, with sales of $1544m and $463m, respectively. Unaxis (2001 sales = $273.0m), Aixtron ($214.9m), and Suss MicroTec ($185.9m) ranked in positions three to five. All three are very active in the compound semiconductor field (VLSI categorizes them as "suppliers of systems outside mainstream semiconductor equipment"). Unaxis provides systems for LCD, TFH, and optical device manufacturing, as well as for conventional IC production. Aixtron is the leading manufacturer of MOCVD systems. Suss MicroTec supplies a range of tools targeted mostly to specialist lithography and packaging applications for ICs, MEMS, and compound semiconductors.

Other compound semiconductor suppliers in the European top 15 list include Trikon Technologies (position #8, $98.7m in sales), Surface Technology Systems (#11, 78.4m), and BOC Edwards (#14, $71.6m). Risto Puhakka
