Formal Opening for Former Epitaxx Expansion (Fiber Optics News)

On December 19, 2000, JDS Uniphase opened its new facilities in West Trenton, NJ, in a ceremony attended by Christie Whitman, Governor of New Jersey, and Josef Straus, CEO and Co-Chairman of JDS Uniphase. The former Epitaxx facility, which manufactures fiber-optic detectors and receivers, has been expanded significantly. "JDS Uniphase is continually striving to increase manufacturing output to meet customer demand," said Josef Straus. "The opening of these new and expanded facilities is a vital step towards achieving that goal." Before JDS Uniphase purchased Epitaxx in November 1999, the company occupied a 42,000 sq.ft. facility and employed about 200 staff. Now, the total space available to the West Trenton Division at two separate sites is some 196,000 sq.ft. and there are close to 1000 staff. Wafer fabrication and optical sub-assembly manufacturing takes place at the original building, which has been extended by 26,000 sq.ft. Module assembly takes place in a 29,000 sq.ft. space in a new building, which also contains almost 50,000 sq.ft. of clean room space that is currently been fitted out.
