Agility Ramps Laser Production to 1,000 per Week (Fiber Optics News)

Agility Communications has finished the first phase of an expansion plan aimed at boosting capacity for packaged InP laser diodes to 1,000 per week by the end of the year. The 2-year-old spin off from UCSB has transferred all InP laser diode packaging from its original site at Santa Barbara to a 30,000 sq.ft. fully automated, high-volume manufacturing facility in Allentown, PA. The first products are expected this spring, and will include a tunable sampled grating DBR laser capable of producing 4 mW at any of 100 ITU channels across the entire C-band (15301565 nm). The expansion is part of the company s intention to supply up to one million lasers per year by 2003. Agility s three-year manufacturing plan is to begin installing the necessary infrastructure to meet that goal, and the company anticipates completing phase two of the expansion to produce 10,000 lasers per week by the end of 2002. Agility is also evaluating additional manufacturing facilities worldwide to take it beyond an annual capacity of one million lasers. "Agility is recognized in the industry as being one of only a few companies in the world to have the expertise and facilities to manufacture these sophisticated, widely tunable lasers in desirable quantities at reasonable costs," said Ron Nelson, president and CEO. "Because Agility s high-power, widely tunable lasers have been exceptionally well received in the marketplace, we fully anticipate continuing to scale our manufacturing facilities to produce more than a million high-quality lasers per year to support the explosive growth in this industry."
