Lucent Delivers High Capacity Networks to NTT and Time Warner (Fiber Optics News)

Lucent Technologies has installed two new optical networking systems that dramatically increase network capacity. A network installed by NTT Communications of Tokyo is Lucent s first commercial deployment that utilizes both the C- and L-bands for transmission. The WaveStar OLS 400GL DWDM system uses an L-band amplifier operating from 1565 to 1610 nm, while most current DWDM systems use only the C-band (15281563 nm). The system was designed to maximize the bandwidth potential of NTT s dispersion-shifted fiber, which can carry many more wavelengths in the L-band than in the C-band. The new system allows simultaneous transmission of up to 40 L-band wavelengths operating at data rates of 10 Gb/s. In more news, Time Warner Telecom is to deploy Lucent s new 1.6 Tb/s optical networking system. Time Warner provides optical broadband networks and services to business customers, will be among the first to use the WaveStar OLS 1.6T DWDM system. Initially, Lucent will deliver and install the system with a capacity of 800 Gb/s (320 channels 2.5 Gb/s or 80 10 Gb/s). However, the system includes a combiner/splitter that allows a carrier to double the network capacity without interrupting service when extra bandwidth is required. The installation is expected to be completed by mid-2001.
