Corning to boost production in Italy (Fiber Optics News)
Corning is investing $150 million in Corning Optical Technologies Italia (Corning OTI), the optical components and devices business it recently bought from Pirelli (see Compound Semiconductor November 2000, p25). This will allow the company to significantly increase its capacity for pump lasers, lithium niobate modulators, certain specialty fibers and fiber gratings. The expansion will follow the relocation of the company s optical components device manufacturing operations from Bicocca to San Donato near Milan. The new facility is expected to be fully operational, and its employment level doubled, by the end of 2001.
