JDS Uniphase to reorganize following merger with SDL (Fiber Optics News)
JDS Uniphase has announced plans to reorganize following the finalization of its merger with SDL, which has involved the sale of its pump laser facility in Zrich to Nortel Networks (see ). Two new business groups have been created. One of these, the amplification and transmission business unit, will be headed by SDL s CEO and president Don Scifres. This division will consist of several sub-groups at different locations responsible for amplification modules (e.g. Raman lasers and EDFAs), transmission modules (transmitters and receivers) and components. The last category includes 980 nm lasers manufactured by SDL, photodetectors manufactured at the West Trenton facility (formerly Epitaxx) and communications components made by the former Philips Optoelectronics unit in The Netherlands. Jay Abbe, currently the president and COO of JDS Uniphase, will now lead the WDM, switching and thin-film products business group. This will continue the manufacture of passive products such as arrayed waveguides, MEMS devices and thin-film filters. "With our increased technological expertise and economies of scale, we will now be able to supply new innovative component and module offerings as well as increased focused efforts for chip-level integration," said Scifres.
