Nova Crystals makes room for VCSELs (Fiber Optics News)

Nova Crystals, a manufacturer of VCSELs for fiber-optic and datacom applications, has secured new facilities to enable the high-volume production of long-wavelength VCSELs for short-to-long haul, high-bandwidth telecoms. Located in San Jose, California, the 40 000 sq. ft building will expand the company s production floor space fivefold. The acquisition also includes approximately $10 million in production equipment and a dozen engineers. "We re already experiencing tremendous demand for our proprietary VCSEL-based products," commented CEO Felix Ejeckam. "This expansion will enable us to meet this rising demand." 1310nm VCSELs reach 10 Gbit/s At the recent Optical Fiber Communication conference (OFC), Nova Crystals announced that its long-wavelength 1310 nm VCSEL has been proved capable of operating at 10 Gbit/s. Preliminary devices achieved 7 mW of output power and exhibited single spatial mode and single polarization state output. The company believes these devices will be the first practical VCSEL source for LAN, metro and access markets, and will offer samples to customers during the third quarter of 2001.
