OIF adopts more short reach interface standards (Fiber News)

The Optical Internetworking Forum (OIF) is continuing its adoption of high bandwidth very short reach (VSR) interfaces. Two new 10 Gbit/s VSR interfaces were recently agreed with the aim of reducing the cost of the high bandwidth data links required in local environments such as central offices. As shown in the table below, VSR3 and VSR4 complement the two short distance link standards adopted recently (see Compound Semiconductor March 2001, p6). The VSR3 standard (VSR OC-192 four-fiber interface based on parallel optics) employs four parallel channels at 2.5 Gbit/s and uses 850 nm VCSELs. VSR3 links with four fibers in each direction will use 8 of the 12 fibers in a multimode ribbon. Four-fiber solutions are also being specified in the ANSI Fibre Channel standard and Infiniband. VSR4 (Serial shortwave VSR OC-192 interface for multimode fiber) is for 10 Gbit/s data links over 50 m multimode fiber at distances up to 85 m, or up to 300 m with high bandwidth (2 GHz.km) multimode fiber. VSR4 is a serial interface standard that describes the use of a single 850 nm VCSEL and PIN photodiode device, and is a similar interface to that under consideration by IEEE for 10 GbE, expected sometime this year (see Compound Semiconductor February 2001, p69)(see ).
