Oki to produce more 10 Gbit/s components (News from Japan)
Oki Electric Industry Company plans to spend 34 billion in fiscal 2001 (ending March 2002) to boost production of 10 Gbit/s components. The money will fund the expansion of the company s Tokyo production facility and increase output of modulator driver chips to 30 000 units a month about 75% over current levels. It will also double production of laser diodes used in optical-fiber defect detection to 10 000 units per month by the summer. Oki expects optical component sales to double to 30 billion in 2001. Although the US economic slowdown has hurt many components vendors, Oki believes that its devices are in high demand for use in undersea cables and other backbone infrastructure applications, and that the slowdown will have less effect on its own sales.
