Gigacomm goes for VCSELs (Fiber News)

Gigacomm, a Taiwan-based manufac-turer of fiber-optic components, is preparing to start volume production of a range of VCSELs, starting with a 2.5 Gbit/s, 850 nm VCSEL in August, with a 10 Gbit/s version available in 2002. Also planned for 2002 are VCSELs at 1310 and 1550 nm, a 1310 nm edge-emitting laser, and a tunable laser. In addition, Gigacomm is to introduce InP- and GaAs-based photodetectors. Gigacomm is 25% owned by Epistar, an established manufacturer of LED epiwafers and chips. Another share-holder with a 25% stake in the company is the US-based E20 Communications, a producer of VCSEL-based fiber-optic transceivers.
