Optical interconnects increase their grip (Market News)

According to a new ElectroniCast global market forecast, subsystems for internal optical interconnects consumed $81.7 million of the fiber-optics components market in 2000. This global value will increase to $896 million in 2005 and $6.91 billion in 2010. Optical signal interconnection has been used in steadily expanding volumes over the past decade in short reach applications such as communication between modules within equipment units and also unit-to-unit interconnects. Optical interconnects are also now finding practical use in multichip modules (hybrid optoelectronic ICs) and other packages. The factors driving this accelerating demand include:
  • The trend to higher data rates per microprocessor, and the rapidly increasing number of microprocessors per machine.
  • The rapidly decreasing cost of internal optical interconnect links, supported by lower cost emitter and detector chips.
  • Expanding DWDM, giving many more wavelengths/channel, thus more optical interconnect links.
  • "The Internal Optical Interconnect Components & Subsystems Market & Technology Forecast" is available from ElectroniCast - see "www.electronicast.com" for details.
