Cielo Communications launches 1310 nm VCSEL-based products (Fiber News)

Cielo Communications has recently released two new products that feature 1310 nm VCSELs: a 10 Gbit/s serial transponder and a 2.5 Gbit/s per channel parallel array module (see ). The transponder is packaged in compliance with the 200-pin small footprint OC-192 transponder multi-source agreement, which is designed to reduce board space and power dissipation. The transmit side features a jitter filter, high-speed serializer, 10 Gbit/s 1310 nm VCSEL and laser driver. The receiver side incorporates a PIN photodiode, transimpedance and limiting amplifiers, clock and data recovery circuits and deserializer. The transponder is targeted at standards-compliant optical networking markets and comes in versions compatible with OIF, Ethernet, SONET/SDH and Fibre Channel standards for 10 Gbit/s 1310 nm optical interconnects. Also announced is the industry s first 2.5 Gbit/s per channel 1310 nm VCSEL-based array module. The modules, which are available in eight- or 12-channel versions, are designed for use in OC-48 SONET applications, including dense optical networking and backplane interconnects. Cielo claims that the modules give a 60% reduction in power consumption and 75% size reduction over currently available products. The modules utilize monolithic arrays of directly modulated 1310 nm VCSELs to perform high-data-rate transmission in separate ultra-dense transmit and receive packages. Using the 8 or 12 transmit/receive channels at 2.5 Gbit/s per channel gives bandwidths of 20 or 30 Gbit/s respectively, over distances of up to 15 km. The arrays include independent signal detect and transmit disable functions on each channel to enable greater flexibility. "Our 1310 nm VCSEL arrays are based on a disruptive technology that will significantly stimulate growth of a new generation of optical networks," said Mick Wilcox, product marketing manager for Cielo s array products. "Our product provides the densest OC-48 interconnect solution in the industry. Cielo s 1310 nm parallel optic solution will enable clean migration to a 1310 nm singlemode solution supporting distances up to 15 km." Volume production of both the 10 Gbit/s transponders and the parallel array modules is expected in late 2001.
