Ten gigabit datacom transceiver market will reach $9 billion by 2010 A new study from ElectroniCast forecasts that the market for 10 Gbit/s datacom transceivers will grow from $157 million in 2001 to $9 billion in 2010 (see ). From a low start of 100 000 transceiver units in 2001, the serious roll out of 10 Gbit/s links in 2003 will require 2 million units. Explosive growth will then continue for several years reaching nearly 7 million units in 2005. The Electronicast report breaks down this market across five different applications: OC-192 very short reach, proprietary 10 Gbit/s interconnects, Fibre Channel, Infiniband and 10 Gigabit Ethernet. Suppliers of VCSELs and photodetectors will be key beneficiaries of this growth. The report predicts that 10 Gigabit Ethernet will have a strong position throughout, followed by 10 Gbit/s Fibre Channel in the latter half of the forecast. OC-192 very short reach will make an early impact, using low-cost 4 fiber parallel 10 Gbit/s transceivers. The portion of Infiniband requiring 10 Gbit/s transceivers begins to show significant growth after 2005. The first year of serious deployment will be 2002 with a value of $1.14 billion. Very strong value growth will follow despite declining module prices, though this decline in price will begin to slow value growth beyond 2006.
