First 1310 nm EML from Multiplex (Fiber News)

Multiplex (South Plainfield, NJ) has introduced the first commercially available 10 Gbit/s electro-absorption modulated laser (EML) operating at 1310 nm. EML sources are relatively common at 1550 nm, while 1310 nm systems generally use directly modulated DFB lasers. Multiplex believes that in the future 1310 nm EML transmitters will be used with Raman amplifiers in the S-band, taking advantage of the near-zero dispersion property of fiber near 1310 nm. Amplification using EDFAs is restricted to the C- and L-bands in the 1550 nm window (see ).
