RFMD to open packaging facility in Beijing industrial park (GaAs News)

RF Micro Devices (RFMD) will open a packaging facility in China at the Beijing Xingwang Industrial Park, a site established over a year ago by Nokia in conjunction with the Chinese government and local economic development representatives. RFMD is the first supplier to be invited by Nokia to participate in the park, which will support the latter company s business in China and other markets. RFMD s facility will contain test and tape and reel operations, and will serve as the final stage of assembly for components manufactured at the company s facility in Greensboro, North Carolina. "The Beijing Xingwang Industrial Park was established to further strengthen our market position in China," said Petri Vainola, Nokia s VP of sourcing and procurement for the Asia-Pacific region. "RFMD is an important supplier, and we look forward to their participation in the park and their contribution to the success of our efforts in the region." Occupants of the new industrial park will consist of Nokia s preferred suppliers, and RFMD expects its presence to drive further growth in China. In addition to supplying Nokia, the facility s location will enable RFMD to supply other handset manufacturers in China, which last year became the world s second largest mobile phone market behind the US. RFMD will begin construction of its facility in the fall of 2001, and expects the site to be completed within 12 months.
