Alcatel sets new 40Gbit/s world record (Fiber News)

Alcatel has claimed a new world record in long-haul DWDM transmission by transmitting 32 channels at 40 Gbit/s over a distance of 2400 km in a laboratory demonstration. The 1.28 Tbit/s aggregate bandwidth was achieved using non-zero dispersion-shifted fiber and distributed Raman amplification. Raman amplifiers create less noise than EDFAs, a key feature for high-data-rate operation, and also allow for a significantly larger amplification bandwidth.
