Hong Kong University to develop blue and green LEDs (LED News)

The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (Kowloon, Hong Kong) has received HK$15 million ($1.9 million) to develop and manufacture high-brightness blue and green LEDs. The funding came from the Innovation and Technology Fund, an agency that incubates technology in the region, and was supplemented by sponsorship worth HK$4.5 million ($570 000) from three local LED companies. These included LED lamp and display maker COTCO, LED producer Strong Base Investment and Lighthouse Technology, which also makes LED displays. The project is also supported by an equipment grant from Aixtron, while Epichem will assist with the supply of metalorganics. "Currently, local LED companies have to rely on overseas suppliers for processed LED chips, as Hong Kong lacks both the technology and infrastructure to develop its own inorganic LEDs," said project coordinator Kei May Lau. "Through this initiative we will design, fabricate and test prototype LEDs before transferring the technology to industry. Local companies can design their devices for their own specific applications to be integrated with their systems. Moreover, Hong Kong will also benefit from a pool of locally trained experts specializing in LED device design and processing."
