Paracer Samples Products (Fiber News)

Born less than a year ago with the aid of $6.5 million in venture capital, Paracer is shipping samples of its first product a 1 12 parallel array with an aggregate capacity of 30 Gbit/s. The array suits very-short-reach (VSR) applications such as board-to-board and unit-to-unit communications, and the firm claims to be shipping to all major OEMs. The transmitter and receiver pairs use arrays of 850 nm VCSELs from external suppliers and photodetectors connected by a fiber ribbon cable. Other products released in September are a four-channel (3.125 Gbit/s per channel) transceiver and a transponder compliant with the OC-192 (10 Gbit/s) VSR-1 standard. Paracer says that meeting large-volume orders will not be a problem as the company has an agreement with Foxconn Electronics to outsource volume production. Like Picolight, Paracer is not soldering modules onto boards but using pluggable modules. These make it possible to test chips before they are placed on a board, and allow repairs or upgrades without replacing an entire board. However, Paracer differs from Picolight because its modules are hot-pluggable they can be slotted onto a board without removing it from its chassis.
