Wireless subscribers to reach two billion by 2007

The total number of worldwide subscribers to wireless cellular services will exceed 2 billion by 2007, according to a new report from In-Stat/MDR.
The next five years will see a dramatic slowdown in the rate of worldwide cellular subscriber growth, according to a report from In-Stat/MDR. Even so, there will be more than 931 million new subscribers over the next 5 years – an average of 186 million per year. By 2007, the total worldwide wireless population will exceed two billion subscribers.

The market research firm says that China continues to lead the world in the number of new subscribers added. However, Africa, Eastern Europe and the Middle East are leading the way in terms of compound annual growth rate (CAGR).

During the forecast period of 2002-2007, subscriber growth in Western Europe is predicted to have a CAGR of only 1.2 %, consistent with the penetration rate of 83.6% by 2007.

Analog will be completely phased out of Western Europe by 2004, CDMA is not expected to make any inroads in the region.

In Europe as a whole, GSM’s overall market share will decline, from 99.1% in 2002 to 91.4% in 2007.

CDMA will continue to be the single most dominant airlink in the US throughout the forecast period. TDMA will be phased out in favor of GSM. In-Stat/MDR predicts that TDMA networks will no longer be operational in the US by 2007.
