Veeco seminar addresses industry convergence

Several presentations will discuss the convergence of the silicon and compound semiconductor industries at a seminar and webcast presented by Veeco.
Veeco Instruments will hold a seminar on “The Convergence of the Silicon and Compound Semiconductor Industries” in conjunction with the official opening of its new Process Integration Center (PIC) in St. Paul, Minnesota.

Part of the seminar, to be held on Tuesday September 9, will also be webcast.

“The need to produce ever-thinner and higher purity films is fueling the convergence of the silicon and compound semiconductor industries,” said Marlin Braun, VP and general manager of Veeco MBE Operations.

“This seminar will present the market dynamics, material sets, and advanced devices pulling compound semiconductors into production applications for the semiconductor, data storage and lighting industries.”

Attendees will also learn how Veeco’s new epitaxial PIC is enabling industry convergence.

“The silicon and compound markets need to integrate tools and processes,” said Hwa Cheng, director of Veeco PIC. “Our PIC and its MBE production tools, both modeled after those in the silicon industry, can provide these integrated solutions.”

The seminar will address the following topics:

* Why the Silicon and Compound Semiconductor Industries Are Converging - Alain Kaloyeros, executive director of Albany NanoTech.

* Market Applications Driving Wide Band Gap Devices to Production - Jeff Nause, president of Cermet Inc.

* The Status of Metal Oxide Device Developments and Scale Up to Production for Semiconductor Devices - Darrell Schlom, Pennsylvania State University.

* Increasing the Areal Density of Data Storage Devices - Ming Mao, Veeco.

* Implementing a Proven Silicon Model into the Compound Semiconductor Industry - Hwa Cheng, director of Veeco PIC.

The webcast will be held from 12.30 p.m. to 2 p.m. Central Standard Time on September 9, 2003. Those wishing to participate should go to the Veeco website for registration information.

The webcast will consist of the first two items on the agenda, “Why the Silicon and Compound Semiconductors Are Converging” and “Market Applications Driving Wide Band Gap Devices to Production”.
