David Miller wins first MBE Innovator award

The North American Molecular Beam Epitaxy (NAMBE) organization has presented the first-ever MBE Innovator Award to David Miller at its recent annual meeting.
The $3,000 award, co-sponsored by NAMBE and Veeco Instruments, recognizes individuals whose innovations have significantly advanced the field of MBE.

Miller, an MBE consultant and Adjunct Professor with the Department of Electrical Engineering at Pennsylvania State University, was recognized for inventing arsenic capping and the valved arsenic cracker while employed at the Rockwell Science Center and, later, at Penn State.

“NAMBE’s selection of David for the MBE Innovator Award is most appropriate, as his work contributed significantly to MBE becoming a critical enabling technology for developing and growing many of today’s advanced telecom devices,” said Marlin Braun, General Manager, Veeco MBE operations.

“The MBE Innovator Award not only recognizes past accomplishments in MBE, it also is meant to spur innovations that further expand MBE’s usage around the world,” said Charles Tu, chairman of the NAMBE advisory board and the nominating committee. “We’re proud to co-sponsor this award with Veeco to advance MBE technology.”

The NAMBE Conference is the largest annual gathering of compound semiconductor researchers and manufacturers using MBE technology in North America.

The organization’s purpose is to share the latest research discoveries in MBE and the new materials and devices based upon MBE, as well as progress in further developing MBE as a high-volume manufacturing technology.
